This is just a metaphor.)

August Featured Student – Claira, 11 years old

Claira has been taking guitar with Miss Val for about 6 months, and she’s a natural! She performed at our Annual Concert in April after only several weeks experience. She was nervous, but Claira rose to the occasion! She excels at power chords, full chords, improvisation, and reading melodies. She even performed her dad’s favorite song as a tribute!

Why Choose Miss Val?

Conventional music education is great at pumping out what Miss Val calls “musical typists,” or people who get skilled at reading music and repeating the sounds on their instrument but don’t really understand what they are doing to make it sound good. Many students get defeated early on (premature failure).

The most common reasons beginner students quit their conventional music practice are:

1. Confusion with reading music notation
and/or
2. Not enough compassion from teacher

It’s like second nature for the conventional teacher to play their instrument well, so they can’t relate to the frustrations of the beginner student with the standard one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Each student enjoys a unique experience as the curriculum is individualized to directly relate to each student’s interests, prior music experience, aptitude, challenges, and goals. Even the books are chosen for each student on a case by case basis.

How Do Humans Learn Music?

Music Learning Theory explains how and when humans learn music…it’s very similar to how we learn language. Why do we learn to read English years after we start to speak it, but we expect music students to start reading music on Day 1? Conventional music education starts with reading music and works backwards. No wonder it seems so confusing!

Music Learning Theory, developed by Edwin E. Gordon, outlines a process of learning music through the sequential development of five musical vocabularies.

Five Musical Vocabularies:

These stages are analogous to language acquisition, where listening precedes speaking, thinking, reading, and writing.

Have you ever picked up an instrument excited to learn to play music only to put it down a few minutes later feeling like you’re getting nowhere?

Making Music Less Mysterious & More Fun!

Miss Val specializes in targeting problem areas and demystifying the seemingly complicated language of music. She prioritizes teaching her students to create music with a casual, pressure-free style. Her students appreciate how she makes learning music accessible and fun for everyone!

Miss Val’s original games and materials combine creative ways of learning various music concepts with colorful drawings and diagrams that are easy on the eyes and brain.

Although it is eventually encouraged, learning to read standard music notation is optional for all students.

Whether you’re wanting to learn how to play specific songs, improvise, read music notation, understand music theory, or even write your own songs, Miss Val’s Music Magic can help with all of your music goals.

Let’s play some music together!
